Suzanne Hamel est originaire de Sept-Îles sur la Côte-Nord. Après des études en dessin
de mode au Collège Lasalle à Montréal, elle s’établit dans la métropole et travaille dans l’industrie de la mode. Puis elle entreprend un Baccalauréat en Design Graphique à l’Université du Québec à Montréal où elle découvre le monde de l’illustration. Son projet final, «Le fil», un livre dans lequel elle illustre onze définitions du mot «fil», lui permet d’allier plusieurs techniques. Cet exercice fait émerger un langage pictural et il en résulte une première exposition avec deux autres artistes. L’année suivante elle est invitée à présenter son travail chez Les brodeuses. Dans ses œuvres, l’artiste intègre acrylique, fusain, papier, couture et broderie pour créer des univers organiques où elle laisse parler son inconscient.

Suzanne Hamel was born in Sept-Îles on the North Shore of Quebec. She left her native 'Côte-Nord' to study fashion design in Montreal and worked in this industry. After few years, she undertook a Bachelor degree program in Graphic Design at 'Université du Québec à Montréal' where she discovered the world of illustration. As her final project, she made a book entitled 'Le fil' (The Thread), containing illustrations of eleven definitions of the word 'thread'. A new means of expression opened up to her through that experience and later she presented her work in a joint exhibition with two other artists. The following year she was invited at Les brodeuses. Her work combined acrylic, pastel, paper, sewing and embroidery. She creates organic worlds to give voice to her subconscious.
